Extended hydrocarbon analysis can also be done for compounds up to about C15. Hydrocarbons are desorbed and can be run by GC with FID and PID detection or GC/MS for more detailed analysis. When significant amounts of oils are identified, the sample can be extracted and run for whole oil chromatography by GC/FID or GC/MS. This can help to characterize actual fluids that have leaked from the reservoir and can be compared to type fluids from nearby production.
